Why It's Not Too Good To Be True

Most homeowners' first reaction is "What's the catch?" That's fair — it sounds too good. The honest answer: there's no catch. There's a business model that's powered hundreds of thousands of California homes for over a decade.

You save

You pay less for the same electricity, locked in for 20+ years. No upfront cost, no surprise utility hikes, no maintenance worries.

The PPA company earns long-term

The PPA provider legally owns the system, which makes them eligible for the federal solar tax credit (30% ITC) and equipment depreciation — neither of which most homeowners can fully use. Combined with 20+ years of monthly payments, that adds up to a fair return on their investment.

The grid wins too

Solar reduces strain on the grid and adds clean energy to the mix. That's why utilities, governments, and major lenders all back these programs.

It's not magic. It's a financing model — same idea as a mortgage or a leased vehicle, just for the energy on your roof.

Three Simple Steps

3 simple steps to lower energy bills

1

We Design Your System

A solar consultant visits your home, reviews your energy usage, and designs a custom system to maximize your savings.

2

We Coordinate the Install

We manage permitting, inspections, and professional installation through our licensed installation partner. You get one point of contact start to finish.

3

You Pay Less for Power

Starting day one, you pay us a fixed rate for the electricity your system produces — lower than your utility bill.

Three Roles. One Team. No Runaround.

A solar PPA brings together three specialists, but you only ever talk to one of us. Here's who does what — and why we keep it tight.

Latham — Your Advisor

We're your single point of contact from the first quote through years after install. We design your system, walk you through pricing, handle the paperwork, and stay with you. One phone, one email, one team.

North Valley Power — Your Installer

We don't subcontract installs to whoever's available that week. North Valley Power is our exclusive installation partner — the same vetted, certified crew on every Latham project. Top-tier workmanship, full accountability.

GoodLeap, EnFin, or Sunrun — Your PPA Provider

The PPA provider funds and owns the system, monitors and maintains it, and backs the equipment warranty. GoodLeap powers solar for top-tier contractors nationwide. EnFin offers a Levelized PPA — a fixed, predictable monthly payment — and is backed by Qcells, the #1 US solar manufacturer. Sunrun is the largest dedicated residential solar provider in the country, with millions of installations behind it. We pick whichever delivers the best terms for your home.

Three roles, one experience. You hire Latham — we bring the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about PPAs

Fair question — almost everyone asks it. The honest answer: there's no catch, there's a business model. The PPA provider legally owns the solar system, which makes them eligible for the federal solar tax credit (30% ITC) and equipment depreciation — neither of which most homeowners can fully use. Combined with 20+ years of monthly electricity payments, that adds up to a fair return on their investment. You get cheaper electricity now; they earn it back slowly over time. The "free install" isn't charity — it's how this financing has worked across hundreds of thousands of US homes for over a decade.
The PPA provider — GoodLeap, EnFin, or Sunrun — owns the equipment for the duration of your agreement. That's why they handle equipment warranty, system monitoring, and any repairs. You own the electricity the system produces, at a lower rate than your utility. EnFin's product is called a "Levelized PPA," meaning your monthly payment is fixed and predictable, calculated from the system's average annual production.
All your communication runs through Latham. We're your advisor and single point of contact. North Valley Power is our exclusive installation partner — the crew that physically installs the system. GoodLeap, EnFin, or Sunrun is the PPA provider that funds and owns the equipment. Three specialists, one team — and you only ever deal with us directly.
A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is a contract where we install solar panels on your home at no cost, and you agree to purchase the electricity they produce at a fixed rate — typically lower than your current utility bill. You pay for the solar electricity generated, not the equipment.
Even customers with lower bills often find PPAs worthwhile because the PPA rate is locked in and typically lower than utility rate increases. We'll provide a free savings estimate to show your potential.
The PPA is transferable to the new homeowner. We handle all paperwork and the new owner steps into your savings agreement. No prepayment penalty — it's a simple transfer.
Standard PPAs are 25 years, which matches the lifespan of modern solar panels. After 25 years, you have options including an extended agreement, system buyout, or removal.
We handle all maintenance and repairs. We monitor your system 24/7 and service it as needed. You simply enjoy the savings with zero hassle.

Own Your Solar System

Yes, we offer ownership. The pre-paid lease option lets you keep the 30% federal tax credit upfront and own the system outright — a fit for customers who have the capital available and want long-term control. Most homeowners we work with end up choosing a PPA because it requires no money out of pocket and starts saving immediately — but if ownership is the right fit for your situation, we'll help you do it right.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about pre-paid lease ownership

A pre-paid lease means you pay upfront at 70% of the system cost (after receiving the 30% federal tax credit), and you own the solar system from day one. There are no ongoing lease payments — it's outright ownership.
The federal government offers a 30% investment tax credit on solar installations. If your system costs $30,000, you can claim a $9,000 tax credit on your federal return, reducing your net investment to $21,000.
No — the pre-paid lease option is available anywhere in California, regardless of your utility. SDG&E, PG&E, SCE, LADWP, and all other California utilities are supported. SMUD is highlighted because they offer an especially strong battery incentive ($10,000 cash for two Tesla Powerwalls + $800/year), but the pre-paid lease itself works statewide.
Yes. Travis Credit Union offers solar loans at 6.99% fixed for 20 years. Monthly payments are often offset by energy savings. You still own the system and receive the tax credit and incentives.
Your solar system increases home value and sells as part of the property. There's no lease to transfer — the new owner simply owns the solar equipment. Studies show solar homes sell faster and for more money.

SMUD Battery Incentives

Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) customers can stack a $10,000 cash battery incentive plus up to $880/year ($110/quarter per battery, two-battery max) from the SMUD MEOP demand-response program on top of the 30% federal tax credit. It's one of the strongest residential battery programs in California — and it's specific to the SMUD service area.

5yr
Demand response commitment for the $800/year payments

How the SMUD Incentive Stacks

Three benefits that combine to make battery storage dramatically more affordable for SMUD customers

1

$10,000 Cash from SMUD

When you install two Tesla Powerwalls and enroll in SMUD's demand response program, SMUD pays a one-time $10,000 incentive directly toward the cost of your battery system.

2

$800/Year from SMUD

Annual payment to participate in SMUD's demand response program. SMUD uses small amounts of stored power from your batteries during grid peaks — you're paid for the participation.

3

30% Federal Tax Credit

The federal solar investment tax credit applies on top — covering 30% of the eligible system cost after the SMUD incentive. We'll model the exact math for your home.

Why This Program Is Worth Your Attention

SMUD's incentive is one of the most generous residential battery programs in California — but you have to be in their service area

Reduces battery cost by thousands

Two Tesla Powerwalls typically run $20,000–$24,000 installed. The $10,000 incentive cuts that nearly in half before the federal tax credit is even applied.

Pays you ongoing

$800 per year of demand response payments is essentially a recurring rebate for owning batteries that were already going to sit there most of the time anyway.

Backup power when the grid goes down

Beyond the incentive, batteries keep your home running during PSPS shutoffs and grid outages. SMUD area summer outages and wildfires make this practical, not theoretical.

Pairs with solar or stands alone

Already have solar? Batteries can still qualify. Adding solar at the same time? Even better — the combined system often pencils out to net savings within the first decade.

How SMUD Stacks Up

A few CA utilities offer battery incentives — SMUD's is generally the strongest for residential customers

SMUD

$10,000 cash + $800/yr

Best-in-class residential battery incentive. Sacramento area only.

PG&E, SCE, SDG&E

SGIP rebates available

California's Self-Generation Incentive Program offers tiered battery rebates — generally smaller than SMUD's program but still meaningful for qualifying households.

Other CA utilities

Federal tax credit applies

30% federal tax credit applies statewide. We'll check what else stacks in your specific service area.
